Out of my comfort zone

Hi everyone and welcome, thank you for dropping by!
Today I am sharing a project that took me out of my comfort zone, - it's a lay out, featuring my little granddaughter (of course...) The photo was taken a few months ago.
I hugely admire many of the scrapbookers out there, but somehow the 12 x 12 format always scares me off. However, I have so many lovely photos, that I thought it was high time I would scrap a few of them, so here is an attempt. I love the painterly scrapbooking style of many Australian scrapbookers, so that is the style I tried to follow. I used two paper collections for this, Pink Paisly Butterfly Garden and Prima Tea Thyme. I started with one of the 12 x 12 papers of the Butterfly Garden collection. I fussy cut roses from the 6 x 6 Tea Thyme collection and also some further scraps from the Butterfly Garden, arranged them around my photo and then started to play with Geso, paint, stencils, texture paste and stamps. Finally I added some highlights with water colour pencils and bits of treasure gold. Many layers later it was time to add the embellishments and do some spritzing, and voila a page...... I am not totally happy with it, the embellishments look too heavy and the photo looks somewhat strange with all that paint around, so I think I will need some more practice, but I did enjoy the process and I guess that is the main thing...
Here are a few close ups still:

Thank you for visiting today and I just want to let you know that I really appreciate your lovely comments!

I am entering this to the Zeus and Zoe May Challenge Mood Board

You're too hard on yourself Astrid. This layout is gorgeous ... and your granddaughter is such a cutie! I love how you did the background with all the textures and that little flower cluster in the corner with the banners ... I'm afraid I'll probably pinch that idea for one of my cards.
A totally stunning creation. ox Marg

Have to say I share your love of Australian scrap layouts. There are some amazing artists out there. Georgia Heald is a particular favourite of mine currently.
Love how you've tackled this and managed to get so much of your own style into it. Working on such a big area can be scary but I reckon you'll have it mastered very quickly. Hugs, Jenny x

Dear Astrid, first of all,-your granddaughter looks so sweet in the photo here,-a lovely baby! and your LO is so beautiful, with your added dimentional pieces, the roses are stunning,- Did you roll and fold them yourself? they are so beautiful!!
Also your background is fantastic,-and the banner and flowers in left corner, gives balance with the LOVE and die piece- so I just love this new art LO -, it is so wonderful

Astrid, this page is beautiful as is your Granddaughter! I so love the soft color palette you used and the subtle texture! Lovely all the way around!

Astrid, as usual, your layout and use of texture and design is beautiful. I do agree with you this time, however, on your observations, however slight imperfections they may be. Try matting the photos a bit larger so they aren't butted right up to the surrounding texture. The embellishments would have looked more synchronized with the page in a light to mid-tone color. These are such very small points, though, and you have done a wonderful job. Just think of 12 x 12s as a very large tag!

Not just a page, a really beautiful page... the layers of paper, paint, stamping and texture give it such depth of detail, and I love the composition of your dimensional embellishing - beautifully done! Well worth stepping outside your comfort zone for - I'm thinking it won't be long before you feel completely comfortable here too!

Just got a whole lot of new stamps from a brilliant place called the Stamp Smith. This is the image that I first saw on Docraft and really liked. I asked the friend who has used it in an ATC, where she got it. Well she borrowed it from a friend who got it from ebay as a one off. But.... it had a title. I googled the title, and hey presto found the site. They have great stamps and offer a really friendly fast service. I highly recommend them!
