Today I am sharing an altered frame I created with one of the adorable Christmas Images from Nicecrane Designs.
I'm afraid to say I got a bit carried away and started to add more and more to my piece, - I think I should take lessons from some of those wonderful "Less is More" people out there, but hey ho, I'll share it with you anyway, seeing I have done it now.
I started by making the background for the central panel. I added some texture paste through a couple of stencils and when it had dried added some colour with Distress Stains.
Next came some stamping in the background with Distress Inks and some stencilling with my new Tim Holtz shattered stencil, using mainly Iced Spruce.
Here you can see some detail. Not sure why I am showing this, because in the end I covered it all over, but at least it can serve as a reminder for myself. I now wish I had left it like that...
Right, so then I started to add several layers as a backdrop to the image and forgot to take further step by step photos, - usual story with me, I get so into the process that I totally forget about the old camera.
As you can see, I added the image (a black and white one from one of Nicecranes many wonderful Christmas Images) on top of several other layers. Here is a close up of the image
You can find all of his wonderful Christmas images HERE.
The wooden frame was altered in a very similar way: Texture added through stencils first, but this time I also wanted some crackle, so I painted it with Paper Artsy Fresco in French Roast, then added some Crackle Glaze and then did the top coat in a mixture of colours to blend with the background of my central panel. Finally the raised bits were highlighted with Treasure Gold in my all time favourite colour White Fire.
Here are some more close ups
The brown around the edges was done with some Tsukineko Walnut Stain, I also did some background stamping still. And as I was going over the top, it got a rather elaborate Flower cluster and beaded trim also still.
Well, there you have it, I am truly not sure whether I like it, but what is done is done and I will just have to live with it....
Hope you are finding some creative time and thank you for dropping in like always!

WOUW this is stunning Astrid, and I must say, I absolutely LOVE every little piece, you´ve added to this, so to me it´s just perfect and I think, it would´ve been much more boring, if you hadn´t added, what you have. That´s the beauty of crafting, we all like something different, so there´s some to love everything, no matter, what or how you make it right? I LOVE this frame.
Have a wonderful sunday dear friend.
I think this frame is beautiful, Astrid! Your textures are always so fabulous! The Santa image is beautiful and I love that it's black and white.
I think its wonderful Astrid - love the texture especially - brilliant xx
Well I really like it Astrid! It exudes fabulous vintage warmth. The beaded trim is a gorgeous touch and I too love the 'white fire' wax. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday. Nicola x

Astrid, I always LOVE all the layers, textures and elements you incorporate into your pieces! This is amazing and gorgeous in every detail and I wish I was not afraid to add more at times, but I know how you feel about covering up something so lovely! Happy Sunday! Hugs!

Dear Astrid, I really had to smile and nodded in agreement when I read your description. I often think after adding something: "Eek, that was too much! Before it was better." But I think you don´t have to worry - it came out very nice, I like it! xx Evelyn
I LOVE IT! I am working on a canvas at the moment and I ruined it totally yesterday (got carried away with ink sprays!) so I have decided to gesso it and try again (hope this will work!)...So glad you posted this as you have totally sparked some ideas for me - inc stencils and crackle. Thanks so much for the inspiration. Lots of love from Laura xxxx
Ignacio must be thrilled with this as it is spectacular and thank you for sharing the steps with us as it certainly gives an insight into all the layers and textures you achieved.
It is White Fire I've been using in abundance on cards using Ignacio's images, the gilding seems to suit his vintage Christmas images.

Dear Astrid,
All those wonderful layers, OH you are so masterly creating them, with the added stamping and beautiful paste to give life, and the fantastic frame --love the crackle and stamping on that, too-- surrounding the lovely image from Nicecrane. Thank`s dear, for your step by step, and beautiful photo trail.
Warm hugs, Dorthe

Beautiful frame Astrid, I love all the texture and the layers. Sue C x
Glorious layers in the background - and you can always go in a similar direction and leave off sooner another time - I've just had a similar experience with a project! I love the rich gilded creation you've ended up with, though - so much texture and depth, and that's at least partly owing to all the beauty layered underneath. Gorgeous gilded texture down the side!

Oh, love the Thackeray quote too, thank you!
Gorgeous Astrid, just gorgeous !!!

Wow Astrid, I love this piece!!!! So much going on with the textures and the colours and the crackle and the stamping, and all of it just perfect!!! Sometimes we are way too critical of our own works (been there, done that) but I think this is absolutely spectacular!! ox
